Historical Facts:

When: Cupro-nickel has been used in coinage since the mid-19th century. The British Empire first used it for the "bronze" penny in 1860.
Why: The combination of copper and nickel creates an alloy that is both corrosion-resistant and durable while maintaining an attractive silver-like appearance. This makes it ideal for coins that need to withstand extensive use without losing their luster.
Interesting Facts: During World War II, many countries turned to cupro-nickel for coinage due to the scarcity of pure metals. In the US, the Jefferson nickel of 1942-1945 was made of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese, replacing the pre-war nickel alloy. Today, many modern coins, including the Euro and several Commonwealth coins, are made from cupro-nickel due to its balance of practicality and aesthetic appeal.
